Since 1996, the City Tower of Gmünd is available for the Cultural Initiative as an impressive place for exhibitions for all the visitors coming to the medieval town. Every summer there is displayed an extensive exposition from artists with international reputation on four floors. In the last years, the Gallery in the City Tower of Gmünd has become famous for international acknowledged graphic reproduction (Kubin, Flora, Dürer, Goya, Miró etc.) and has counted growing numbers of visitors. Praise always goes to the good didactic implementation of the exhibitions and the wide framework programme with lectures and matinees, movie nights und special guiding offers. It’s mostly thanks to those big summer exhibitions in the Gallery in the City Tower, which brought a little fame as exhibiting town to Gmünd. By now, the Gallery in the City Tower is one of the most important exhibitions places in Upper Carinthia. Since the opening in 1996, there have been artists like Albrecht Dürer, Francisco de Goya and Joan Miró exhibited. This year, the Gallery in the City Tower presents with WILLIAM TURNER England's most successful landscape and marine painters.
Usually, there are specialist lecture matinees taking place, theme-based movies shown in the Cultural Cinema Gmünd and a wide-ranging Art Education programme for kids and school classes offered. Also, every year there is a catalogue of the exhibition published.

For more than 20 years, the Gallery Gmünd has been the heart of the cultural work in Gmünd. The gallery is located in a former stable building which belongs to a local bank and is rented by the Cultural Initiative. This gallery is a platform for young contemporary art, whose exhibitions show current tendencies in the Austrian and international art scene. Classical techniques such as painting and graphics as well as installations and cross-over performances, sculpture or conceptual positions find their place in Gallery Gmünd. The programme in this gallery is sponsored by Dolomitenbank Gmünd.
This year, the Cultural Initiative presents the Austrian artist GERLINDE THUMA, whose passion is drawing. In terms of content and form she deals with the topic of time and the difference in perception. Afterwards, the Carinthian Artist LAURIEN BACHMANN is shown there. In her artistic works, the young artist combines theme- or location-related finds with digital media such as photography, video and sound, and sometimes installs them spatially.
The Gallery Miklautz, Old & New Art hosts former guest artists of the Cultural Initiative Gmünd and gives them a place to display their latest works of art. The gallery is located in wonderful gothic rooms where this year a broad range beginning with early art history leading to current Urban Art is exposed. Irritations, substitutions and trompe-l’oeuil surprise and leave behind stunned visitors. The artists exposed there is ELKE MAIER. She transforms the gallery "art flooded" that still reveals the processual movement of its creation. We can be tense!
The gallery is open until 13 October 2018, on workdays from 10:00 to 13:00 and 15:00 to 18:00
The Alte Burg Gmünd is an old castle located on the highest point of the small town with a marvellous view over the valley. In the castle, there is a lot to see: a gothic cellar, the Knight Hall and the Lodron Hall to only mention the exhibition places. The programme exposed there is a mixed one. Many local artists or artists from partner towns can present their work there as well as schools or sheltered workshops. 2019 it is an artist who lives in Carinthia, she creates her own picturesque cosmos; populated by human figures, angels, demons, animals and other stylized beings: CAROLINE
The photo gallery Krämmer is the private gallery of a photographer located in Gmünd: Richard Krämmer. He has been a member of the Cultural Initiative since the beginning and restored a historical house where he now lives in and where the photo gallery is located in the basement. Since more than ten years, he has hosted numerous national and international photographers for exhibitions and presentations. In the last year, he decided to only display his own work series and use the gallery for his presentations.
In 2016, a new gallery opened its doors outside the walls of Gmünd, only about 500 m from the main square, and it offers innovative things. Since then, the Gallery August has developed to a visitors’ magnet for a simple reason: the special ambiance of the old and impressively renovated house is just as impressive as Jens Augusts giant format photographs. Very soon, a new entry in the guest book appeared: “This has to be one of the most beautiful galleries in Europe!” and it did not take long until national and international journalists and reporters arrived. All of this is thanks to the German photographer Jens August who once worked as popular fashion and advertising photograph and, in the meantime, chose the region of Gmünd as his new home. After just six months of renovation there was a new gallery to be marvelled at, with furniture and accessories from Antiques Miklautz, even including a small gallery café. Already one year after the opening, Jens August came up with the next idea: art containers on the main square, which provide mobile exhibition rooms. The first Art Container was located at Gmünd’s main square last year, since 2018 its place is next to the Villa August. Thanks to the Carinthian artist Katharina Steiner, flowers need to be looked for not only under your feet, but also above your head. On the containers walls there are photographs from Jens August exhibited.
This gallery of the artists BIRGIT BACHMANN and FRITZ RUSS is always worth a visit! Coming from the street (the Kirchgasse) you first enter a small courtyard and then the three exhibition rooms full of art and atmosphere. Birgit Bachmann impresses with her typical oil woodcut made with harmonised, muted colours and her meticulously made graphite drawings. Fritz Russ’ big, eye-catching metal sculptures show his creativity and expertise – for example a dog made of chains, a sheep made of steel wool, a cow made of milk pots. Also, LAURIEN BACHMANN, Bank Austria art award winner 2012, attracts attention with her new works.
The amazing and constantly extended sculpture garden of the repeatedly awarded metal sculptor FRITZ RUSS fascinates countless cultural interested visitors year after year. Opened all year round from sunset till sundown the garden invites to stroll, watch and wonder. Whether a walk-in castle made of locks or a huge toolbox made of old rusty tools – it’s always tools used over decades from various professions that the artist give new life and purpose. It is really worth a visit just to see how lovely arranged and spread those unique works of art are in this garden along the riverside!
The Gallery Studio Tomassetti in the Kirchgasse offers insight in the artistic work of the two artists living in Gmünd LARISSA TOMASSETTI and FRANK TOMASSETTI-KROPIUNIK during summer. Larissa Tomassetti, who likes to get inspiration from nature, is characterised by her large-sized colourful paintings. A passion for abstract painting and strong colours marks the works of Frank Tomassetti-Kropiunik. Both artists exhibit as well in a small studio at the City Tower, Larissa Tomassetti’s big public walk-in (or actually lie-in) installation “Floating State” can be visited at Kirchplatz.

In 2006, Gmünd gained a remarkable historical building as multifunctional space for events: the Lodronsche Reitschule, which is, just like the Spanish Riding School in Vienna and the Rock Riding School in Salzburg, a former horse-riding school of the family of count Lodron. In the 20th century the old building was used as grain warehouse. Later – while it still was not heatable – it became a studio for the local sculptor Fritz Russ. Within a national exhibition in 2006, the riding school was renovated from top to bottom. Today, it is available as perfectly equipped event location for all associations in town and region and is a perfect location for big events. The Cultural Initiative Gmünd uses those beautiful facilities as well for cultural events, for example for contemporary dance performances, but also for exhibitions.
