EXHIBITION STADTTUMGALERIE GMÜND 2020
Picasso to Hockney
EDWARD QUINN. Artist Photographer
In preparation for the Picasso catalogue, we have worked together closely with the Edward Quinn Archive (CH). Since having to postpone the Picasso exhibition to 2021, we are delighted by the solidarity the archive has shown in providing us with a charming and high quality alternative.
The exhibition Picasso to Hockney. EDWARD QUINN. Artist Photographer presents a wonderful selection of photographs by the Irish Edward Quinn, a Master of Art Photography who would have celebrated his 100th birthday this year. Thus, the Tower Gallery in Gmünd is able to show a first-class exhibition despite difficult times for arts and culture.
Modern Art’s Who is Who in Photographs
Edward Quinn (1920 – 1997) is well known for his perceptive and sensitive photographs of the rich and famous, be it movie stars or members of the nobility including Grace Kelly, Brigitte Bardot, Cary Grant, or Romy Schneider. Moreover, he is one of the 20th century most sought-after art photographer of significant artists. His pictures which are shown regularly in renowned international galleries, provide a memorable and discreet insight into the world of artists and their art.
The exhibition Picasso to Hockney. EDWARD QUINN. Artist Photographer in the Tower Gallery, of over 70 carefully selected, perceptive and very personal snap shots of 20 artists are an exceptional representation of Quinn’s life’s work. They include Alexander Calder, David Hockney, Francis Bacon, Salvador Dalí, Georg Baselitz, Alberto Giacometti, Max Ernst as well as Henri Matisse and Joan Miró – artists whose work has been exhibited in Gmünd in the past. A true Who is Who of modern art in photographs!
One of the rooms has been dedicated entirely to Pablo Picasso’s famous family and studio photographs whetting our appetite for the exclusive Picasso exhibition taking place in Gmünd in the summer 2021. As his friend and photographer, Edward Quinn could accompany Picasso for over 20 years to his houses and his studios, even permitted to catch a glimpse of his privacy. Quinn’s material on the great Spanish master consists of 30,000 negatives. It was by means of Picasso that Edward Quinn gained access to the art scene of his time and to those artists who would shape the last century. Quinn always endeavoured to establish a longer-term relationship with the artists he worked with, in the effort to present a truthful insight into their lives and artistic work. Quinn was an expert at blending and uniting into one the respective artist’s artwork, their personality, and the life they led. It was that talent which made him one of the most popular artist photographers of his time. The result: countless illustrated books and monographs on artists such as Picasso, Max Ernst, or Georg Baselitz. Extensive notes about the picture as well as texts about his encounter with the artist himself always formed an essential part of these publications. They offer a wonderful insight into the thoughts of this virtuoso of art photography.
